Relive Classic Football Matches
SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv, in the absence of live sport, will be able to relive some of the greatest football matches of recent years and the history of 'The Beautiful Game' through the week of 27 April - 3 May 2020.
Monday 27 April features Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo giving Bayern Munich a football lesson in the UEFA Champions League, with the Spanish side claiming a 4-2 (6-3 on aggregate) triumph on their way to winning the second of three European titles in succession from 2016 to 2018.
Viewers can also enjoy a Super Diski Classic as SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns renew their rivalry in the Nedbank Cup final, while Leicester City and Manchester United met in the 2016 Community Shield, which saw the debut of 'The Special One' Jose Mourinho as manager of the Red Devils against the previous season's shock Premier League champions.
Tuesday 28 April is headlined by the 2002 World Cup classic between Sweden and Senegal, which saw the Teranga Lions triumph 2-1 after extra time to become just the second African team to reach the quarterfinals of the global competition – following in the footsteps of Cameroon in 1990.
“Very beautiful. And completely mad," was how the late Bruno Metsu, coach of Senegal at the tournament, described the match, while star man El Hadji Diouf explained: "This was always going to be a difficult match, a match of warriors and we had the trump cards. We showed once more we are a band of brothers, a bunch of friends who want to go all the way, and we will go all the way."
Wednesday 29 April features more classic African football, as we showcase the Women's AFCON final between Nigeria and South Africa, as well as Didier Drogba's star turn in the FA Cup final for Chelsea against Manchester United, and Germany's triumph over Czechoslovakia in the 1996 UEFA Euro final.
The final day of the month, Thursday 30 April, sees viewers treated to an FA Cup classic between Swansea City and Manchester City from last season which saw Pep Guardiola's side mount an incredible comeback to reach the semifinals, an edition of 'El Clasico', the storied rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona in La Liga, as well as Wigan Athletic tacking Manchester United in a Community Shield match which was the first of David Moyes' ill-fated reign with the Red Devils.
The month of May opens on Friday with more classic football, including the colourful Spanish clash between Villarreal and Atletico Madrid, a UEFA Euro final classic from 2000 which saw France overcome Italy, and the London rivalry between Arsenal and Chelsea is revived in the 2017 Community Shield.
Saturday 2 May is all about the FIFA World Cup, as SuperSport 10 features three great matches from the tournament in succession. We start with Brazil's thrilling 3-2 win over the Netherlands in the 1994 quarterfinals in Dallas, Texas, before moving on to South Africa's 1-1 draw with Mexico on home soil in the opening game of the 2010 finals, and finish up with Nigeria's legendary 3-2 win over Spain in the group stage of the 1998 edition in France.
"One of my best moments in life," said Super Eagles legend Sunday Oliseh, whose 78th minute strike is one of the finest goals in World Cup history and secured the famous win for his side.
The week's relive football action closes out on Sunday with more contemporary offerings – from the currently suspended season to be exact – with Mallorca v Valencia from La Liga and the always entertaining Lazio taking on Sampdoria from Serie A, as well as South Africa taking on Spain in their opening game from last year's Women's World Cup.
