Mahrez and Ndidi Standout for Africa
Viewers on DStv and GOtv enjoyed another great weekend of football action, with the continuation of the 2019/20 Premier League and La Liga.
African stars once again played key roles for their clubs in Europe’s major leagues, with Algerian star Riyad Mahrez helping Manchester City stay on track in the Premier League with a 3-1 win away to Everton.
Following a seventh straight win for Liverpool earlier in the day, it was vital for the Citizens to get a victory at Goodison Park in the late kick-off on Saturday. They found themselves drawing 1-1 until the 71st minute when Algerian star Mahrez struck direct from a free kick to break Everton’s resistance and set his team on the path to three vital points.
Nigerian midfielder Wilfred Ndidi was another African star to shine brightly in England’s top flight, with the Super Eagles star putting in a powerful showing and netting a goal in Leicester City’s 5-0 thrashing of Newcastle United.
Ndidi and his Leicester side will face a true test of their mettle when they tackle Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday 5 October, while Mahrez is set to continue being a vital cog in Pep Guardiola’s machine when City play at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday 6 October, crunch matches for SuperSport viewers to look forward to.
In Spain’s La Liga, Allan Nyom and Djene Dakonam’s Getafe were beaten 2-0 at home by Barcelona, Ramon Azeez got the better of fellow Nigerians Chidozie Awaziem and Kenneth Omeruo in Granada’s 1-0 win over Leganes, and Thomas Partey played the full 90 minutes for Atletico Madrid’s 0-0 home draw with derby rivals Real Madrid.
SuperSport viewers can look forward to seeing Partey’s Atletico take on Real Valladolid on Sunday in the next round of matches from Spain’s top flight, while the key game is a mouthwatering clash between Barcelona and Sevilla, in which the former could again unleash Guinea-Bissau-born rising star Anssumane Fati.
