Our Franchise
Jembas is an Angolan Company founded in 1989 to meet customer needs for premium products and service support in the key developmental and industrial sectors of energy and communications. Jembas’ success is based on superior technical knowledge of the premium products provided, outstanding service and support to clients, and an army of high-calibre technical and support staff. These attributes are central to the company’s unique niche as a single source supplier from the point of initial appraisal and product sourcing, to maintenance support.
MultiChoice Africa partnered with Jembas to establish MultiChoice Angola in 1998 and has since enjoyed significant growth in its subscriber base. MultiChoice Angola has offices in Luanda, Lobito, Lubango, Cabinda, Namibe and Soyo.
The key to MultiChoice Africa’s success in Angola has been its ability to adapt content to meet the needs of the local Portuguese speaking market. Since 2001 when MultiChoice Angola launched its first three dedicated Portuguese channels, the offering has continued to develop. In 2004 a further 12 Portuguese channels were added to the Bué bouquet.
We ensure our product is distinct and offered at a price our market can afford. Our communication mix currently includes press, Radio, Outdoors and POS (point of sale) materials.
MultiChoice Angola introduced the KU-W4 satellite in 2002, providing the first Portuguese Bouquet and cheaper equipment and installation prices. In 2004 the SESAT satellite was introduced, increasing the offer of Portuguese channels. MultiChoice Angola now uses the EUTELSAT W4 and SESAT satellites. The use of these sophisticated satellites has enabled us to significantly increase our Angola channel offering.
MultiChoice Africa continues to expand its channel offering, most recently through the introduction of the Panda and SuperSport Máximo 2 Channels on the Portuguese bouquet.
Our Commitment
MultiChoice Africa will continue to lead the development of a vibrant and diverse media and television industry, keeping Angola at the forefront of the digital technology revolution.
In keeping with international trends, MultiChoice Africa launched high definition television (HDTV) on its digital platform in 2008. This is an exciting development in television and highlights that the African continent is standing shoulder to shoulder with the developed world in introducing these technologies to the African consumer.
MultiChoice is committed to Angola, and as our business has grown so has our involvement as an investor in the country and supporter of a number of socially deserving causes, as we aim to aid development and alleviate poverty. Education and access to information are key to the development and growth of a nation, and therefore we have invested in MultiChoice Resource Centres in 20 schools across the country. These centres provide input into education through the depth and breadth of DStv’s educational and documentary programming.
Students in the various schools are now able to better understand sophisticated concepts that are difficult to grasp without a visual experience. We will be making further investments into resource centres in schools across Angola in the future.
Local Content
There is increasing demand across the continent for the localization of TV content. We are committed to creating and supporting African content, made by Africans, for Africans, reflecting Africa back on itself with programmes such as Big Brother Africa, Deal or No Deal, Idols and Studio 53. The phenomenal success of our local content initiatives has led to the launch of Africa Magic and Africa Magic Plus, both of which feature exclusively African content.
Sport is a critical component of the local content mix, and we are proud of the support and commitment SuperSport has given to the development and showcasing of African soccer, with support for Zambian, Kenyan, Nigeria and Angolan soccer. Two dedicated Portuguese language sports channels are produced by SuperSport – Maximo 1 and 2 which showcase three of the most popular teams in Angola means that more Angolans will now have the opportunity to view the games of their local teams across Angola. Signed up are: Petro Atletico, the team who won the 2008 league this season and who are supported by the Angolan oil company, Sonangol. Our second signing is the army team, and the most widely supported team in Angola, Primiero Augusto. The final signing is Interclube who are supported by the Angolan Police department and the third most popular team in Angola.
Social Responsibility
MultiChoice Africa has made a substantial investment in the development of education in Angola through the MultiChoice Resource Centre programme. Currently 20 schools across Benguela, Huila, Huambo, Bie and Luanda provinces participate and benefit from the programme. Implemented in partnership with the Angolan Ministry of Education, the programme also develops the capacity of teachers to draw the most out of the technology and content which they can access through the programme. MultiChoice collaborated with Ajuda de Desenvolvimento De Povo Para Povo (ADPP) in training 160 teachers on the programme during 2007.
